The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a world-class education institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was founded by William Barton Rogers in 1861 and admitted its first students in 1865. MIT's mission is to advance knowledge and educate students primarily in the fields of science and technology. Following the vision of its founder the institute continues to focus on teaching and research "with relevance to the practical world as a guiding principle". It is organized in five schools and one college, encompassing 34 academic departments, divisions, and degree-granting programs, as well as numerous interdisciplinary centers, laboratories, and programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries.
